Therapy can help with:

Some Reasons Adults Attend therapy

Meeting with a therapist can help prevent everyday challenges from becoming overwhelming burdens.

Talking with a therapist can help adults navigate through a variety of issues, from work-related stress or relationship struggles to exploring deeper aspects of personal identity. Therapy isn’t solely for major life events or emotional crises; it’s a valuable resource for managing the complexities of adult life and promoting overall well-being.

Here are some of the things we can work through in therapy:

The perinatal period and the transition to postpartum life can bring profound emotional, physical, and mental changes, often leading to feelings of anxiety, sadness, or overwhelm. This period can challenge even the strongest individuals, affecting their mood, energy levels, and connection with their new child and others. Therapy offers a supportive and understanding space to address these feelings, explore coping mechanisms, and enhance emotional well-being. It provides strategies to manage the unique stresses of motherhood, improving overall mental health and facilitating a smoother adjustment to this new life phase.
Navigating cancer, from diagnosis through treatment, can be daunting and emotionally draining for both the individual and their family. Therapy can offer support, providing a space to discuss fears and concerns, manage stress, and cope with the emotional impact of a diagnosis.

Stress and anxiety can manifest physically, emotionally, and mentally, impacting your overall well-being, relationships, and performance in various areas of life. Therapy provides a safe space to explore the root causes of stress and anxiety, develop coping strategies, and learn relaxation techniques to manage symptoms effectively.

When your relationships with your partner, family, or friends are experiencing tension, it can lead to feelings of loneliness, frustration, and resentment. This can have a significant impact on your mental health and overall happiness. Therapy offers a neutral environment to address communication breakdowns, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationship bonds through improved understanding and empathy.

Depression can make you feel hopeless, fatigued, and disconnected from the world around you, affecting your motivation, self-esteem, and daily functioning. Therapy provides support and guidance to explore underlying issues contributing to depression, develop coping skills, and create a personalized treatment plan to promote healing and recovery.

Grief and loss can turn your world upside down, triggering intense emotions, such as sadness, anger, and guilt, and disrupting your sense of stability and identity. Therapy offers a compassionate space to process grief, express emotions, and navigate the stages of mourning, facilitating acceptance and adjustment to life changes.

Low self-esteem and identity struggles can undermine your confidence, sense of worth, and ability to pursue goals and relationships. Therapy helps you explore and challenge negative beliefs about yourself, build self-awareness and acceptance, and cultivate healthier self-esteem and a stronger sense of identity.

Life transitions, such as job changes, relocation, or major life events, can evoke stress, uncertainty, and fear of the unknown, disrupting your sense of stability and routine. Therapy offers support and guidance to navigate transitions, explore emotions and concerns, develop coping strategies, and adapt to change with resilience and confidence.

Approaches We Use In Adult Therapy

Our team of therapists work with you to find the right treatment approach for you.

ACT helps you accept your thoughts and feelings rather than trying to control them, focusing on what you can change. It focuses on helping people embrace their thoughts, feelings, and emotions rather than suppressing, avoiding, or controlling them. ACT is effective for anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, and overall well-being.

EFT is a powerful, evidence-based approach to counselling, focused on helping individuals recognize and process their emotions. It helps you understand and manage your emotions better, empowering you to express and handle them in healthier ways. EFT is useful for depression, anxiety, trauma, and improving relationships.

ART reshapes distressing memories, reducing their impact using guided imagery and bilateral eye movements. Sensory Awareness Focused Technique (SAF-T) is an innovative way to help alleviate negative sensations in the body (anxiety, pain, discomfort, stress) and facilitate feelings of calm. ART is helpful for treating trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and phobias quickly.

IFS is an evidence-based and integrative approach that focuses on the relationships between parts and our core self, aiming for healing and balance. It is effective for anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationship issues.

CBT helps you identify and manage the underlying cause of your emotional struggles so you can change negative thought patterns and behaviours. By changing thought patterns, it’s helpful in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, panic attacks, and phobias.

DBT teaches mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills to manage emotions and improve relationships. It’s a powerful tool for helping you deal with emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, self-harm, and disordered eating so you can gain control over your mental health and live a more fulfilling life.

Somatic Experiencing focuses on the mind-body connection and the body’s natural ability to heal through physical sensations and movement. It’s a gentle, body-focused approach that can be very effective in supporting recovery from trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief, and helps with stress management.
EMDR helps reduce the distress associated with traumatic events using guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. It’s been shown to be effective when used for trauma, anxiety, and depression to reduce symptoms and improve coping skills.
ERP helps individuals with OCD by gradually exposing them to feared situations or objects and reducing compulsive behaviours. It’s helpful in treating OCD and related concerns by reducing compulsions and increasing tolerance to anxiety-provoking situations.

Questions About Therapy For Adults

While child therapy and parenting support is what we’re best known for, we have multiple seasoned therapists who specialize in a wide range of adult therapy services. You do not need to be a parent to access care at our clinic.

In parent support sessions, we offer guidance in the context of parenting and the challenges they are facing with their child. Alternatively, adult therapy services provide in-depth psychotherapy for any adult needing support for their own mental wellness. Adult therapy sessions can help you to identify and manage challenging feelings, thoughts, behaviours, and experiences, whether it be in a parenting role or in other areas of life (e.g., work, relationships, life transitions etc.).

The frequency of therapy sessions often depends on each individual’s specific needs. Typically, sessions occur every other week (in-person or video format), but this can fluctuate based on the severity of the issues being addressed and how you’re responding to therapy. Some adults may choose to complete monthly wellness check-in sessions over time. It’s a decision best made in collaboration with your therapist, considering your own needs, goals and schedule.
The duration of therapy varies depending on your individual needs and goals. Some people may only need a few sessions to address specific concerns, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy to work through deeper issues or to maintain ongoing support. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to establish a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs and progress.
If you don’t feel like therapy is helping you, it’s important to communicate openly with your therapist about your concerns. Your therapist is there to support you and make adjustments to the therapeutic approach as needed to better meet your needs. Sometimes, it may take time to see progress or find the right therapeutic approach for you. If you continue to feel dissatisfied with therapy, let us know and we can match you with another therapist or find other therapy options that may be a better fit for you.
