HOW TO GET STARTED WITH AN ASSESSMENT

Not Sure If Your Child Needs An Assessment?

All assessments start with a 1-hour consultation. In this first appointment, you’ll meet with a psychologist or occupational therapist to determine whether a full assessment would be beneficial for you or your child. If you move forward with an assessment, your initial payment will be deducted from the assessment fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, our services are completely confidential; no information is released without your written consent, with few exceptions (e.g., if a child is being harmed emotionally or physically; when a client is at imminent risk to self or others; or if the release of information is required by law). We go through the details of confidentiality during our consent process, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

When your child is diagnosed with ADHD or a learning disability, what does that actually mean in terms of what support is available to you in the school board and in the community?

An educational consultation provides the clarity you need to move forward. These consultations are used to create a bridge between a formal assessment report and securing intervention or support services, so that you aren’t left holding a 15-page report filled with medical jargon and feeling confused and unsure of what the next step is.

Each session gives parents the opportunity to sit down with one of our assessment specialists to talk in detail about their history of strengths and challenges for themselves or child.

If your child has not had an assessment yet, a consultation can help you decide whether an assessment would be helpful and, if so, the details of the assessment process.

For video sessions, we use Jane App, which is a secure TeleHealth platform that is compliant with all privacy laws and uses a high standard of security. If you are on a computer, you do not need to download anything prior to your session; simply click on the link that is provided to you via email. If you are using a phone or iPad, the link you receive via email will ask you to download the Jane App prior to your appointment time.

At the time of your scheduled appointment, you will click the link provided to you via text or email. This will send you to our virtual waiting room. Your practitioner will connect with you there. Other than being in separate locations, you will interact in much the same way as an in-person session.

Please ensure that you have a quiet and private space to avoid the risk of others hearing your session. This goes for children and teen sessions as well. Having a private space is key to building a therapeutic relationship with your child.

Children under the age of 12 do best with in-person appointments. We may not be able to offer the same variety of interventions or approaches in video format as we can in person. Feel free to contact us to determine whether TelePsychology is a good fit based on your needs.

We offer consultation sessions to parents who are seeking guidance in the context of parenting and the challenges they are facing with their child. This can occur as a stand-alone service or as an integrated part of a child’s therapy process. The focus is on parenting your child rather than in-depth psychotherapy for you as a parent. During these parenting support sessions, we provide evidence-based strategies to help parents best respond to their child’s behaviours and to help them navigate the typical trouble spots in their day. We also work collaboratively with caregivers to help overcome barriers that often get in the way of parenting with intention and to help build capacity in their parenting role.

We are all fully registered psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists and therefore covered by most extended health plans. The number of sessions and portion of fees covered may vary depending on your plan.

We are well-versed and able to support a wide range of referral concerns. We can help with the big things as well as small questions and concerns. Anything from child development, learning how to deal with an age and stage, sleep issues, behaviour, coping, and routines, to the big stuff like trauma, grief, anxiety, self-harm and depression. We believe in prevention and early intervention, so please never feel that your concern is too small or silly to seek support.

Please contact us to discuss further if you are uncertain as to whether your concerns are within our scope.

Note: We do not complete services for the purpose of resolving parent custody and access disputes. We also do not provide parent mediation services or give direct advice regarding parenting time in the context of parent separation and divorce.

This is something we hear often. We are not sure if the said issue is “big” enough for consistent therapy support, but we are feeling lost, unsure, and looking for ideas on how to handle it in the best way possible.

We value early intervention as we know how far it can go in making a difference in the long run. However, you may just need a brainstorming session or two to help you feel empowered and on the right track. As well, your child may benefit simply from a check-in session, and from there, your therapist can help you determine if further services would be beneficial for them.
