What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy offers children and teens the chance to build and strengthen the skills they need to fully engage in their daily lives, from home routines to school activities and social interactions.

Every child encounters unique challenges, and Occupational Therapy provides a safe and supportive space for them to learn and grow at their own pace. Whether it’s mastering everyday tasks (dressing, eating, toileting, and sleep) or enhancing participation in the classroom and social settings, Occupational Therapy helps children and teens develop independence and confidence.

Through tailored and engaging activities, children can work on motor skills, sensory processing, executive functioning, and emotional regulation. Sessions are designed to be playful and enjoyable, using evidence-based techniques that empower children to overcome obstacles, express their needs, and support their body and feelings effectively.

In occupational therapy, children and teens learn:

Occupational Therapy Approaches

Several approaches to pediatric occupational therapy are available to address the unique needs and goals of your child or teen:

Our pediatric OTs conduct detailed sensory and functional (adaptive skill) assessments to identify your child’s specific strengths and challenges. This process includes in-depth clinical interviews with caregivers, direct observations of your child or teen, and the use of standardized assessment tools and questionnaires. The resulting report provides personalized recommendations to best support your child’s progress at home and school, ensuring their unique needs are met.

Sensory activities are designed to help children manage and respond to sensory input in a way that supports their behaviour, learning, and emotional development. Additionally, our OTs can suggest tools and modifications to the environment to meet your child’s sensory needs and support their participation in daily activities and routines.

Our therapy sessions include activities like puzzles, building activities, and arts and crafts to improve fine motor and visual motor skills. We also incorporate activities like obstacle courses and ball games to enhance motor skills and balance.

Independence in self-care tasks is a major goal of occupational therapy. Our OTs help children and teens develop the skills needed for dressing, eating, toileting, and other daily routines. Mastering these skills builds confidence and empowers children to take on their world with more autonomy.

Play is a natural and enjoyable way for children to learn new skills. Our play-based activities encourage social interaction, problem-solving, and the development of fine and gross motor skills. These sessions are structured to be both fun and therapeutic, allowing children to practice and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

Occupational therapy includes strategies to help children and teens recognize and manage their emotions effectively. Children will learn and practice coping strategies and self-regulation skills that can improve their ability to manage stress, adapt to new situations, and build resilience.

Parent coaching sessions provide valuable information, strategies, and support for parents of children with developmental or functional needs. These sessions can be conducted in person, over the phone, or through video conferencing, making them flexible to easily align with your schedule.

Common Topics Covered in Parent Coaching Sessions:

  • Understanding your child’s diagnosis and needs: Learning about the specific challenges your child or teen faces and how occupational therapy can help.
  • Developing daily living skills: Strategies for supporting your child with activities such as dressing, eating, toileting, and sleep.
  • Sensory processing: Understanding your child or teen’s sensory challenges and creating a supportive environment for them.
  • Behaviour management: Strategies and support  for managing challenging behaviours and promoting adaptive behaviour.
  • Communication and social skills: Approaches to improving your child or teen’s communication and social interactions.
  • Educational support: Tips for advocating for your child’s needs at school and collaborating with teachers.

Parent coaching is designed to empower you with the tools and knowledge to reinforce therapy strategies at home and create a consistent, nurturing environment for your child or teen’s growth.

How Occupational Therapy Works

We learn your story and areas of concern

In our first session, we gather detailed information about your child’s developmental history, daily routines, strengths, and challenges. We’ll outline the occupational therapy process and answer any questions you have.

We begin occupational therapy sessions

In follow-up sessions, your child or teen participates in tasks tailored to their needs, such as games and activities to support their sensory, emotional and behavioural regulation. We guide them as they build skills, develop coping strategies, and grow in confidence.

We evaluate and involve parents

We keep parents informed throughout the process, discussing progress and offering guidance for supporting development at home. Our aim is to equip you with the tools to help your child succeed beyond the therapy sessions.

In session, specific activities are customized to your child’s unique strengths and challenges. Your child or teen will engage in a combination of child-led and structured activities designed to help them build essential skills.  The goal is to create a supportive environment where your child can learn, practice new skills, and gain a better understanding of how to navigate their daily life with confidence and independence.

Questions About Occupational Therapy

Sensory processing is how we make sense of the world around us by taking in information through our senses—like touch, sight, sound, smell, taste, and movement. Our brain processes all this information and tells our body how to respond. When a child has trouble with sensory processing, they might feel overwhelmed by certain sights or sounds or may not react much at all to sensory input. This can make daily life feel more challenging and affect how they handle different situations.
The length of time your child will need occupational therapy really depends on their unique needs. It takes time for kids to learn new skills and use them in their daily lives. Practicing these skills at home between sessions is important and helps reinforce what they’re learning. Your child’s occupational therapist will keep you updated on their progress and give you an idea of how things are going as therapy moves forward.
Some insurance plans do cover occupational therapy, and extended health benefits can often be used as well. It’s a good idea to reach out to your insurance provider to see what your specific plan covers so you know what to expect.
Occupational Therapy (OT) is all about helping people of all ages build independence and live their lives to the fullest. For kids, OT focuses on tackling challenges that come with everyday tasks, sensory processing, motor skills, and emotional regulation. Our aim is to help your child develop the skills they need to grow, thrive, and feel confident in their daily life.
Supporting your child or teen between sessions is a big part of their success. Your child’s therapist will give you tips and activities to practice at home, which can make a real difference. Keeping a consistent routine, cheering on their progress, and being patient as they work through challenges can go a long way in helping them apply what they’re learning.
