Helping You Heal from Trauma – One Step at a Time
What Is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people recover from traumatic experiences, distressing life events, and other emotional difficulties.
Originally developed to treat **Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), EMDR has since been used to successfully treat:
* Anxiety and panic attacks
* Depression
* Grief and loss
* Abuse (emotional, physical, sexual)
* Phobias
* Chronic pain
* Performance anxiety
* And more
How Does EMDR Work?
Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR focuses on the way traumatic memories are stored in the brain. It uses **bilateral stimulation**—typically guided eye left-right movements, tapping, or auditory tones—to help the brain process and “re-wire” distressing thoughts, feelings and sensations.
The therapy follows an 8-phase protocol, including:
1. History & Treatment Planning
2. Preparation
3. Assessment
4. Desensitization
5. Installation
6. Body Scan
7. Closure
8. Re-evaluation
By the end of treatment, most clients report feeling that the upsetting memories no longer has the same emotional grip—it becomes something they can remember without reliving.
What to Expect in a Session
An EMDR session typically lasts **50–90 minutes**. During the session, you’ll focus briefly on a traumatic memory while the therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation. You remain in control and aware at all times. Time is also spent practicing adaptive coping strategies (i.e., resourcing).
EMDR is not hypnosis. It doesn’t erase memories—it helps your brain process them in a healthier, more adaptive way.
Is EMDR Right for You?
EMDR can be effective for children, teens and adults. If you’ve experienced trauma or are struggling with emotional distress that hasn’t improved with other approaches, EMDR may be worth exploring.
Every client’s experience is different. We’ll work together to determine if EMDR is appropriate for your needs. Contact us today.
