J.GORDON PSYCHOLOGY GROUP

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What types of clients do you serve?
We provide support to children and teens (0-18 years), parents, couples and adults. Our team includes psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists who specialize in developmental, emotional, behavioural, and mental health concerns.

Q: What kinds of concerns or challenges can you help with?
We assist with a wide range of concerns, including (but not limited to): anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, phobias, sleep difficulties, obsessive-compulsive disorder, emotional or behavioural regulation, self-esteem, parenting stress, learning/attention difficulties, and more.

We also provide assessments (e.g. ADHD, autism, giftedness, psychoeducational) to help clarify diagnosis, strengths, and recommendations.

Q: Do you provide both therapy and assessments?
Yes — we offer therapy services (for individuals, children, teens, and families) and a variety of assessment services.

Q: How do I know whether my concern is serious enough to seek therapy or assessment?
You don’t need to wait until a problem is “severe.” Many people begin therapy when feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to do next. We can also offer shorter “check-in” or consultation sessions to help you determine whether ongoing support or an assessment is appropriate.

If you’re uncertain whether your concern is within our scope, feel free to contact us to discuss your situation.

Q: Do you work with custody, access, or legal evaluations?
No — we do not provide assessments or services for the purpose of resolving parent custody or access disputes, nor do we provide parent mediation or give direction on parenting time in separation or divorce contexts.

Q: How can I begin working with J. Gordon Psychology Group?

Submit an inquiry via phone, email, or our website contact form.

We can schedule a 10-15 minute phone consultation, or a full intake session.

During that first session, we’ll get to know your concerns, history, and goals, and we’ll outline a plan (therapy, assessment, or other).

Q: Do you offer virtual/telehealth sessions?

Yes — we use Jane App, a secure TeleHealth platform compliant with privacy standards.

On a computer: you usually click a secure link (no download needed).

On mobile / tablet: you may be prompted to download the app.

You’ll join a virtual waiting room, and your practitioner will connect with you there.

Please ensure your environment is quiet and private to protect confidentiality and therapeutic engagement.

Note: for younger children (typically under age 12), in-person sessions may provide more flexibility in intervention approaches; virtual sessions with children may have limitations.

Q: How long are sessions?
Session length varies depending on the service (therapy, assessment, consultation). Typically, therapy sessions last about 50 minutes (assessment sessions may be longer and often involve multiple appointments).

Q: What is an educational consultation?
An education consultation is a discussion with one of our assessment Psychologists to help interpret whether a full assessment is warranted, and, if so, to guide what type of assessment is appropriate. It can also bridge the gap between a written assessment report and real-world implementation (i.e. “Now what do we do?”).

Q: Are your services confidential?
Yes, services are completely confidential, subject to standard legal and ethical exceptions. We will not release information without your written consent, except in limited circumstances (e.g. imminent risk of harm to self or others, child protection, court order).

We will review confidentiality, limits, and consent in your initial intake session so you understand your rights and obligations.

Q: Do you accept insurance / are your services covered?
Yes — our practitioners are registered psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists, and thus our services are covered by most extended health / insurance plans. However, the amount of coverage (how many sessions, percentage of fees) will depend on your specific plan. We recommend verifying with your insurance provider before beginning.

Q: When do I pay for services?
Payment is generally due at the time of your appointment, or according to the payment policy that is provided to you. For assessments, we offer multiple payment options (e.g., breaking fees up into mutiple portions throughout the duration of the assessment process).

Q: What happens in the first session?
We use the first session (often called an initial intake session) to get to know you (or your child), understand strengths, challenges, history, and goals. From there, we’ll jointly develop a plan (therapy, intervention strategies, or assessment).

Q: How many sessions will I (or my child) need?

There is no “one size fits all.” Some people benefit after a few sessions; others engage in longer-term work. Your practitioner will monitor progress and check in with you regularly to adjust as needed.

Q: Will progress be measured or tracked?
Yes — we believe in evidence-based and outcome-informed care. We routinely review goals, monitor progress, and adjust plans as needed to stay responsive to your needs.

Q: Where are you located?
Our office is at 4710 99th St. NW, Edmonton, Alberta, T6E 5H5.
